Activity in the Vineyard

The soaring temperatures of Summer 2011 didn’t put a damper on the rush of activity in our vineyards. Three additional varieties of grapes were planted:

Vivant – similar to a Riesling, makes a refreshing alternative to Chardonnay

Chardonel – a cross between the Chardonnay and Seyval grape, makes a full-bodied, dry white wine

Riesling – a white grape with German origins, can produce both dry and sweet wine variations

Harvest is fast approaching! In the next few weeks, we are excited to begin our first harvest of the Vignoles. As a versatile Missouri white grape, it can produce wines ranging from sweet to dry. Soon after the Vignoles, we will begin another first harvest of the ever-popular Chambourcin grape.

Lavender – Tender care of our unique “pie-shaped” lavender bed has yielded growth by leaps and bounds this summer. Dried lavender sprigs and bouquets will be available soon in the gift shop.

Kudos to our vineyard manager and crew, who despite the searing heat, accomplished wonderful things this summer. Along with them, we all anxiously await the cooler temperatures Fall will bring!
